How the market climate comes about
- 01Breadth
Breadth: share of titles in the Favorable state plus half the share in the Mixed state, in percent, based on titles with a valid state. Breadth only counts if at least 95 % of the universe have a valid state.
- 02Volatility
Volatility: the market volatility measure (VIX), scaled linearly. At 12 and below this gives 100, at 35 and above it gives 0.
- 03Credit
Credit: state of the ETF-based credit signal. Favorable gives 100, neutral 50, cautious 0.
All rules in detail
Market climate = round of (50 % breadth + 25 % volatility + 25 % credit), result from 0 to 100. The market climate is a descriptive convention, not a forecast measure and not a forecasting tool. It is not a trading instruction.
Band limits: Cautious 0 to 39, Mixed 40 to 64, Favorable 65 to 100. The exact value always sits next to it. The band limits of the market climate (65 and 40) are not the state limits of a single title (70 and 40).
If a component is missing, the market climate cannot be computed. Nothing is reweighted and nothing is substituted. If the record is older than two trading days, the number is not shown.
Worked example with invented numbers
An invented day: 30 % of titles favorable, 40 % mixed, 30 % cautious give a breadth of 30 + 20 = 50. The volatility component has a sub-score of 65 (scale 0 to 100). Credit is neutral and gives 50. Market climate = round of (0.50 x 50 + 0.25 x 65 + 0.25 x 50) = round of 53.75 = 54, band Mixed. The numbers serve only as an explanation.
Only days of the same calculation version are compared.
